John Sheppard is one of Bristol’s oldest and most established butchers, supplying the catering community of Bristol since 1936. As a proud sponsor of the Bristol Good Food Awards, the business prides itself on championing local producers and is passionate about keeping Bristol supplied with the finest ingredients in the country.

Why did you want to be involved in the Bristol Good Food Awards 2016?

Bristol is a vibrant hotbed of outstanding local producers, suppliers and independent restaurants. After being involved in the BGFA Bath and Bristol events in 2015 with category sponsorship and supplying produce, we felt that by supporting the BGFA 2016 we could highlight our personal support for an event that showcases the hard work of Bristol’s food sector which puts Bristol on the map as the one of the strongest culinary areas in the UK.

Why do you think it is important to support Bristol’s food scene?

Support for Bristol’s food scene is imperative for all of us to ensure that we can continue to build on the continued dedication of the people involved in all aspects of the food and drink sector in Bristol.

How is your business involved in the local food scene?

As a third-generation, family-owned catering butchers we have been supplying meat, poultry and game products to private and commercial customers in Bristol and the surrounding areas for more than 80 years. During this time, we have built very strong relationships with local suppliers within the industry, reinforcing the integrity in our local supply and ensuring the quality of our locally-sourced products. From several high-street shops to where we are now in a purpose-built production facility in central Bristol, we have maintained our passion for sourcing quality local ingredients for our customers.

What do you think are the most important aspects of a great foodie experience in Bristol?

If you are eating out in Bristol, whether it’s a quick snack, lunchtime break or a three-course meal, you are sure to find a local independent restaurant, café or pub to enjoy a friendly atmosphere with top-quality food produced by skilled people using locally-sourced local Ingredients.

How can we all do more to ensure Bristol remains the regional food capital of Britain?

Support of local suppliers, producers, restaurants and events such as the BGFA is imperative if we are to maintain the high level of local products currently on offer in the city. It is also vital to continue to seek out and find quality ingredients from local producers as this will help support our local food economy for the years to come.
